Accustomed to playing large arenas everywhere, it comes as some surprise that Hayes has chosen the Brisbane Convention Centre – not the Entertainment Centre – as his port of call on his Too Close For Comfort tour.

“You know, really I wanted to get people to connect with me,” Hayes admits. “I wanted to sort of show that, when people left the theatre, that they were talking about my music and my voice and not my hair. I think for me personally I needed to be reminded of what it is that I do and I needed to remind my audience of that. But I really wanted to be in a situation where I didn’t have any props or don’t have any production to hide behind, it’s just me, my voice, my audience, a spotlight and that was basically just the concept of the tour from the very beginning.

“Basically it’s about the style of performance that I wanted to do. It’s definitely a way to take away some of the security blankets. I mean, I’ve done the kind of show that’s big and poppy and colourful. I went and saw the Kylie tour when I was in London and it’s fantastic but my show is the complete antithesis of that at the moment because at this point in my career a) I’ve been there but b) I wanted people to just focus on what it is that you employed me to do which is write songs and sing for you.”

In conjunction with the tour, Hayes has also released a new single ‘Crush (1980 Me)’. An ode to his 80s obsession, it shows that he’s not just about the power ballad.

“It’s my favourite song on the record. It really is! It’s fun, it’s tongue in cheek, it’s a bit of a piss-take and you know, at the same time, it’s about my love of 1983 and how much it’s shaped me. I think that period of my life was when I really believed that anything could happen.”

Enlisting the help of independent filmmaker Grant Marshall, Hayes created his epic video masterpiece without backing from record label Sony, showing just how passionate he was about the project.

“It’s all authentic as well, we went to great lengths in terms of just creating the film and with art direction and set design. I mean look, there’s choreography, there’s conflict that can only be resolved through [dramatic stage whisper] the power of dance – hilarious,” Hayes laughs.

“And you know, so far it’s become one of my most popular videos in the places that it’s been released. It’s been number one in Mexico for six weeks, purely I think, because of this video and what people think of it, so it’s got people talking.”

Darren Hayes plays the Brisbane Convention Centre Saturday Sep 7. Spin is out now through Roadshow Music.
