Charming Darren Spins
(Swedish SOLO Magazine, 02/05/02)

Savage Garden have split up. Now Darren Hayes debuts without Daniel Jones with album "Spin".

- "I'm used to being interviewed without Daniel, but it's going to feel weird being onstage without him," says Darren Hayes.

He has had a couple of days off during his Stockholm visit where he's done some shopping and sightseeing in the Old Town. Even though he's back to his natural blonde hair colour, his Swedish fans recognise him and wait outside of Grand Hotel . One of the new songs is about stalking.

- "I don't have any stalkers even if some of my fans think I'm the father of their unborn child, or that we've lived together in a past life. But I think I have the coolest fans in the world."

The new single "Insatiable" is about, duh, insatiable feelings. Darren claims that he's obsessed with everything from food to love. Savage Garden got their name from an Anne Rice novel, and Darren calls himself a "Star Wars-freak", and he knows all the lines to "In Bed With Madonna" by heart. But what would we see in "In Bed With Darren"?

- "Not much, he laughs. I want to keep the private private."

? Have you got a girlfriend?

- "No."

If you had one, would you say it??

- "No."

Who would you rather be, a vampire, Madonna or Luke Skywalker??

- "I cut myself in the finger with a razor recently and I thought I'd pass out when it never stopped bleeding, so vampire is not even an option. I like Luke Skywalker's light saber."

A couple of years ago the Australian moved to San Francisco where the new album was recorded. In "Spin" he sings about the music's role in today's anxious world.
- "Music is not a cure for cancer, but it's a way to make people smile, and through music we can draw attention to the matters of the world and find a solution together," he says.

At the bottom of the article:

Darren Hayes' favourite records:

Spiritualized - "Let it come down"

- "One of my true favourites."

Peter Gabriel - "Us"

- "Keeps you up when your marriage is falling apart."

U2 - "Achtung Baby"

- "This record made me fall in love with the band."
