(caption with picture -- Former Savage Garden singer and now solo performer Darren Hayes returns to the 1980s and his musical roots on his new single.)

The year was 1983, when Cyndi Lauper and Prince ruled the airwaves.

It was the year Darren Hayes decided he would one day be a popstar.

Almost twenty years and more then 20 million album sales worldwide later, Hayes paid homage to the era which inspired him on his new single Crush (1980 ME)

He was so impressed with the song he produced the video clip before getting the nod from the record company, calling on a student film-maker to carry out his mission.

"The video is hilarious" Hayes says, "It was so much fun and I had something to prove as well."

The song has references to Hayes' influences and idols during the 1980's pop explosion, from Cyndi Lauper to Madonna and Prince."It was before reality television and Internet", he says, "There was a distance between you and your idols."

The irony is Hayes has become a pop idol himself, thanks to his success as a member of Savage Garden and now solo artist.

Hayes describes going out on his own "like when your parents leave you the house for the weekend and you can do whatever you want."

"I was so used to compromising all the records I loved as a child and the musical style that didn't fit in with Savage Garden." he says. "I had so much fun writing for a year before deciding when the pattern would emerge".

Darren Hayes performs at Thebarton Theatre on Friday. September 13.
