Notes from Eva: (Keep in mind that while I don’t know the quality of this magazine, it doesn’t sound too much above a rag, as you’ll see at the end. So take it with a grain of salt.)

The headline makes play on Darren’s name, Darr, a form of which (dar) in Russian, means ‘gift.’ Basically, it says, ‘clairvoyance.’ Underneath, it explains that Darren Hayes knew about the tragedy of 9/11 in advance.

When the duo Savage Garden broke up a couple years ago, millions of girls worldwide cried nonstop for several days. But recently, a miracle occurred: the sexiest member of the duo, Darren Hayes, popped up with a super-successful album. Would wish that on every boyband!

Your album is very upbeat and happy. But you were writing it in the states after the tragic attack on the New York Towers. It’s a bit of a contradiction.

Not at all. I don’t think one should hide, doing nothing, or abruptly change one’s style. On the contrary, the more people laugh or smile, or get a mood lift after listening to my album, the better. That means I did a good job. People should be distracted from tragedies and not allowed to retreat into themselves.

What are your feelings connected to 9/11?

I have a horrible and mystical story connected with that date. Early September 2001, I was in New York recording an all-star tribute, ‘What’s goin’ On’ with a bunch of celebrities. It was a big thing for me because the thing was big; the producer was amazing, in my opinion, I sang with Jermaine Dupres and Michael Stipe from R.E.M. I sang, life was beautiful, and I was going to spend a few more days in New York. Then my manager told me she already had the tickets and I could leave the next day if I wanted. I was too tired, though, to be going anywhere without taking a break first. So I called her in the evening and said I was staying for a few more days and she get the tickets refunded. I went to bed and that night I had a horrible dream. I was sitting in the part in the middle of which stood a very tall building. I was not alone – there were people all around, friends, relatives, everyone I’ve ever met in my life. Suddenly, there was a large hot air balloon appearing out of nowhere and it crashed right into the building. The building caught fire and collapsed. And as I woke up to the sound of the ringing telephone, an old friend was on the phone, telling me in a strange voice, “Oh my God, I can’t believe it, turn on your TV.” I turned it on and saw the news and it was worse than the dream. I watched the news the entire day, stunned, until my manager called to say that the plane I was meant to go on that morning crashed in Pennsylvania.

That’s horrible. Let’s talk about the music instead. What do you prefer: touring with Savage Garden or touring alone?

I think the latter. This past year was very nice. Possibly the best year of my life. I was making the album but I was also sleeping in my own bed every night. I was also eating normal food out of my favorite plates, drove my own car. In a word, I was living a normal life that is natural for most people, but which I didn’t have access to for seven years. Granted, Savage Garden weren’t the most hip act in town but we were very busy. And now I’m all domesticated, relaxed. Of course, it would be interesting to talk about bungee-jumping into the jungles of the Amazon, or about meeting aliens, but I’m just a regular guy.

And what is the strongest emotion this ‘regular guy’ experiencing at the moment?

A feeling of rebirth (renewal). It is as if I was reborn while making Spin. Now, I don’t feel like I’m a pretty doll that millions of girls come to ogle. What’s important to me is that the audience, coming back home from one of my concerts, talked not about my newest haircut or my private life, but my music. Let the critics disbelieve – I don’t care.
