Blond ambition blows $800,000

FORMER Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has dumped an $800,000 music video because he didn't like it. The clip for his hit single Insatiable was reportedly the most expensive music video ever shot in Australia. A spokeswoman for his Australian record company said Hayes wasn't happy with the clip and had started again. But sources close to the Hayes project say the video was scrapped because his US record company, Sony Music, had a problem with his hair colour. Since quitting Savage Garden, Hayes has reverted to his natural blond colour and is unrecognisable as the singer from one of Australia's most successful groups. "He is the face of Savage Garden, and the record company needs the audience to recognise him," a source said yesterday. "As it stands, the music video looks like it's from some blond guy named Darren Hayes." Hayes has said he dyed his hair black when he was on Savage Garden as a symbolic showbiz mask. "It was a metaphor for feeling like I had to become someone else," he told the Herald Sun earlier this month.
