Darren Hayes, after the splitting of Savage
Garden, launches his first solo album, Spin, but now, we find out what he really thought
of the group and what his latest restlessness are.
Two years ago Darren was in Mexico, performing a concert with Daniel Jones, when the group
was still together. That visit gave him a great impression, so he was determinate to come
back when he launches his solo album. And he did it. Next day of his showcase in Mexico,
we gathered for an interview.
YOUR BAD HABITS ARE:
D: Iīm a little stubborn and sometimes I act without thinking before, impulsively. I also
criticise myself.
WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR 30TH BIRTHDAY?
D: I was working! Although, a month before, my best friend set up a surprise party just
when I was having the promo trip in Sydney.
A SPECIAL MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD:
D: I was always day dreaming, imagining E.T. coming to see me, for example. I played often
with my star wars figures and then I used to act my own plays.
YOUR FUTURE PLANS:
D: Touring this year, but later, keep making music and have kids. Thatīs for sure. I will
settle down, get married and have a family eventually.
AFTER COMING WITH SAVAGE GARDEN, YOU COME BACK ALONE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE WAY
MEXICANS RESPOND TO YOU?
D: Simply amazing. Everytime I come back, I forget about how friendly and warm not just
the fans but the whole audience is. When I arrived to the airport and saw the peopleīs
reaction, for a moment I thought those screams were for a football star. Not even the
record company people thought that was for me, but then we all had a great surprise when
we realized that it was actually for me. I love the enthusiasm that latin people has.
HAS BEEN A FAN WHO MIGHT TRY TO GO FURTHER WITH YOU?
D: Iīve had a couple of weird experiences when some ladies approach to me and more than
telling me theyīre fans, they confess that theyīre totally in love with me and weīre
meant to be together. They say: "you donīt understand!! I love you! Read this letter
and you will". And they write that they canīt live without me. You can even notice
how desperate they feel. But Iīm pretty sure that If they really knew me as I am and find
all my defects they might change their minds *he laughs*. Actually, Iīm just like anyone,
Itīs just that I live under the spotlight.
LISTENING TO SPIN, YOU NOTICE A LITTLE OF PEACE. IS THIS HOW YOU FELT WHEN YOU WERE
RECORDING IT?
D: Yeah, I was totally happy. I wanted to reflect all the music and feelings I had inside.
I loved Savage Garden, but that was a two people mix, so we finished splitting our actions
and jobs and I felt really compromised sometimes. Now I could act freely and reflect my
love for "funk" and "electronic" music. I wanted to show my joy and
that I could have fun. "Affirmation" for me was about sadness and breaking up,
meanwhile this one leaves a message of hope and positiveness.
WHEN YOU BROKE UP WITH DANIEL JONES, SOME RUMOURS ARISE ABOUT YOU TWO HAVING TROUBLES WITH
EACH OTHER. DO YOU REGRET OF HAVING BEEN IN SAVAGE GARDEN OR ANY INCIDENT?
D: Not at all. I always loved to be in that group, and Iīm proud of every moment. Itīs
funny because people keep asking if I have plans of still playing SG songs, and I reply
"of course, theyīre mine too". Iīm barely having my third album. I recorded
two albums with Daniel and It was an amazing experience, but this is just the next step I
needed to take. However, without those songs and those moments I wouldnīt be who I am
now. I have no regrets cause we achieved our goals.
WOULD YOU BE TOGETHER AGAIN?
D: I donīt think that happens soon. Itīs just that breaking up is so complicated!! We
both wanted different things. Daniel wanted to focus on producing and I wanted to be pop
star. When we realised that the unavoidable was going to happen, It was terrifying.
Finally, I had to face my fears and find the courage for recording a solo album so,
thatīs the way I spent the last two years of my life.
WE ALREADY KNOW SAVAGE GARDEN SHOWS BUT WHAT CAN WE EXPECT OF YOUR SOLO CONCERT?
D: I can tell you in a few words that I look much more relaxed and that is something much
more musical. Itīs not about the show, cause I donīt have any special effects or
something like that, Itīs just me with my music and my voice. This is because I feel more
comfortable now with my role as a singer and composer. On the tour, I sing a few of SG
songs and almost my whole solo album. I plan to come back to Mexico to play, maybe when I
finish my european tour. Besides, Iīd like to have the opportunity of traveling more
countries like Chile and Brazil.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE BEFORE A SHOW?
D: I take care of my voice with vapor. I try to keep myself as much healthy as I can. Iīm
used to practice yoga and training during the day for being in good shape. That is great
cause It keeps me relaxed before show time.
WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER A SHOW?
D: Itīs very boring actually. I calm down my voice and come back to my hotel room. I
order something light for dinner, maybe a soup. It takes me a couple of hours for me to
relax, īcause you throw a lot of adrenaline on stage and īcause most of the shows are at
night, you still have a lot of energy at midnight. Sometimes I check my email or call to
Australia.
