Lightening Delays Concert But Can't Stem Stage Energy
|
They say lightning never strikes in the same place twice, but that is literally not the case for Darren Hayes. Fans of the former frontman of Savage Garden were forced to wait for about an hour in the Brisbane Convention Centre foyer last Saturday night after lightning wiped out the sound equipment just before the concert was due to start. It was a case of déjà vu for Central Queensland fans who still remember Savage Garden’s appearance at the Rockhampton Music Bowl a few years back when a severe electrical storm threatened to cancel the whole event. But any bad memories were erased as soon as Darren hit the stage. The performer has the fans (especially those of the female persuasion) in the palm of his hand for the entire 90 minutes of his Too Close For Comfort show. Gone are the Savage Garden days of fancy clothes and elaborate sets and lighting. The show has been stripped back to the basics, relying instead upon Darren’s charisma and soulful, sexy voice to carry it through. But that does not mean Savage Garden is totally forgotten. The concert contained the perfect blend of that band’s hits like I Want You and Truly Madly Deeply mixed with Darren’s solo tunes including Strange Relationship and Insatiable. Probably the best response was ignited by Savage’s signature tune Affirmation, while Darren’s new single Crush (1980 Me) was another crowd favourite. The concert was a powersurged start to Darren’s world tour that takes in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Russia, Mexico and South-east Asia. |
