After
huge success with Savage Garden, Darren Hayes is now a solo artist. We
put a few pop posers to him backstage at TOTP... |
TOTP: You had great success
with Savage Garden and now you're a solo artist. How did this come about?
Darren: It was a really natural progression. Over the years Daniel was expressing,
increasingly more each day, an interest in not being in the public spotlight. Towards the
end of the last world tour he made it really clear that he didn't really want to be in a
band anymore. He wanted to write music and he wanted to be in the studio, but he didnt
want to be part of a system. It made sense and I completely understood it. I spent the
next year of my life writing songs and just seeing if I had an album in me. I did
and that album is 'Spin'.
TOTP: What are your favourite tracks on the album?
Darren: I love 'Crush', I love 'Strange Relationship', 'Spin' and 'Creeping Up On You'
a lot of the stuff that's faster and more R&B than I've been in the past. It's a
pretty funky album. I listened to a lot of Prince when I was a kid, so its a little
like Prince.
TOTP: The lyrics for your new single 'Insatiable' are quite steamy. Are you as saucy as
they suggest?
Darren: They are saucy, aren't they? I think I am as saucy and on this album it was fun to
feel like I was an adult, and that I can be sexy or steamy if I want to be. It was a lot
of fun writing that song and that's all I can say!
TOTP: Which popstar would you most like to snuggle up to?
Darren: Natalie Imbruglia or Kylie Minogue, the two Aussie girls. They're pretty stunning.
Will you tell Natalie, if you see her?
TOTP: Of course. Continuing in a saucy vein
do you prefer laydeez in thongs or
big knickers?
Darren: I don't like the thong, I really don't. I don't think you should wear one unless
you have a butt of steel and none of us do. Please put the thong away!
