Why Pop Singer's Solo Clip was Axed

Fans of former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes will now get to see the video for his debute solo single that was deemed too "slick" for release. The singe's US record company, Columbia, decided to scrap the $800,000 video for Insatiable shot in Sydnet late last year.
That was despite the clips director, Thomas Kloss, being chosen because of the Roadshow music's managing director, Chris Chard, said the clip had been described as being like a Bacardi commercial and wasn't the look the artist wanted to present to the US music industry and fans. My Chard dismissed a claim that the clip had been scrapped because Hayes' natural blond locks made him less recognisable. "I don't know where that came from, but it's ridiculous" he laughed. "Don Lenner, who is the head of Darrens US record label, made the decision-and Darren"s management supported it. Darren quite likes the video BTW". Columbia paid for it and they wanted to shoot another one, so it's up to them."It's not unheard of for major acts in America to shoot a couple of clips for the one song and then pick the best one. Mr Chard said Hayes' Australian record company was keen to use some of the footage shot in Sydney last November in the video for the albums second single. Hundreds of fans have written to Hayes' official internet site and related web sites demanding to judge the footage for themselves. Some have suggested it be included on a future DVD release of videos from the "we will probably use footage from this shoot for the second single because we will release before they do" Mr Chard said. Hayes told the Sunday Telegraph as he has began shooting the new clip for Insatiable in New York that he wanted his first solo video to be "incredible" "I have been really anal about the clip because it has to be amazing for America. Video is still so important over here and the MTV still has that kind of power to make or break" he said. Australian music video programmers said they were very disappointed the video wasn't ready for the January release as origionally scheduled, but all agreed they would play the new clip as soon as it was available. "We were told it would be here in January and now it won't be here till February, but we've had new clips from Silverchair and Natalie Imbruglia to keep the viewers happy," Channel V music director Mary Datoc said. One industry insider suggested that another reason the clip was junked was because Hayes' danced extensively in it. "We haven't seen him dancing that much before. Maybe it just don't look quite right" the sorce said. Insatiable debuted at NO 3 on the Australian charts last week and is the most added track on the American Top 40 Radio stations. The song also debuted NO 28 on the influential US radio and Records adult comtemporary charts. Hayes is quietly confident his solo can repeat Savage Garden's international success. "I don't want to pre-empt anything but this is one of the most enthusisatic reactions I have ever received for a song" Hayes said. The sound of the album, Spin, whicj will be released in March, has already gamered him comparisons with George Michael. It has been talked up as a US NO 1. Sharing his US limelight is Kylie Minogue, whose Can't get you out of my head jumped from NO 64 to NO 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts last week. |
