It's A Grower

Celebrating the albums that get better with time. Darren Hayes Spin COLUMBIA 2002 Was there a wetter band than Savage Garden? Probably not, but Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones didn't care. Their two albums sold over 20 million (in comparison, Barry Manilow's lifetime of balladeering has notched up under 60 million). Now solo, Hayes has the countenance of a man whom you'd rather didn't babysit your offspring and is as wet alone as were Savage Garden. But for the second time, Hayes is eating up the world with an album of slowly revealed charm. He's as versatile a vocalist as Michael Jackson (try spotting the difference on Heart Attack) and he's is brimming with songwriting ideas (try forgetting Strange Relationship). Another reminder that traditional ideas won't die." |
