Spinning Around

“Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes returns with a solo debut and spills all about his new life, real hair colour, and his “little stress bean”. Well, sort of…

Why did you call the album Spin?

Because the word kept coming up in all my songs! I think it probably refers to the fact that my life is constantly moving it’s a blur, it’s like a rollercoaster ride or some kind of spin.

Would you describe it as a Savage Garden record or is this more you?

The first record was very pop, the second record was very organic and I think my record is sort of a cross between both of them. it’s an electronic record. But it’s sexier, it’s a little bit more fun and that obviously reflects where I am in my life and where I was at that period. I was very relaxed and I had a life, which I hadn’t had for seven years.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Insatiable’?

The pursuit of love. I wasn’t in a relationship at the time. ‘I Knew I Loved You’ was a similar thing, I was not in love when I wrote that song. But I am a dreamer, I’m someone that looks forward and often songs can be prophetic. You write them and then later on, you experience that. It definitely has its head up in the clouds, that song.

You told MAX the last time that you wanted to be in Star Wars: Episode II; are you in it?

(Laughs) No! I auditioned, but I couldn’t do it because they were shooting the entire time that I was touring. But I got to walk around all the sets and there’s still one more movie to make yet, so there’s still a chance!

There’s a line in your album thank you notes that says “to my little stress bean”… could you please elaborate on that?

(Looks surprised) Actually, I don’t think it does. (after being shown the inlay) Oh, my gosh, I need this! Anyway, I can’t tell you what that means! (laughs) Oh, that is so cute. Who gave you this? (asks record company dude) Do you have a copy of this? Ooh, I didn’t really hide that well, did I? It’s private! That was meant to be taken out, actually. I thought it was too personal, but it ended up on some copies!

How long did it take you to write your thank yous?

It took me a couple of weeks because I kept forgetting people. From my manager to my assistant to the person who combs my hair in the morning (?!). Everybody in the world, I wanted to say thank you.

Are you sick of doing interviews?

Yes. It depends on how I’m feeling. This one’s good!
(Yea to MAX!) I’ve been promoting this record since November, and it’s only now that I’m starting to get a little bit snippy. (laughs) Like someone came in here before and asks: “Would you like to be remembered for your looks or your music?” And I just said, “What do you think?” Come on! And they’re like, “I don’t know, what do you think?” And I’m like, “You know what I think, because it’s what you think and it’s what everyone would think.” And actually, would anyone answer anything other than, you know…Looks, of course! Right! (laughs) When someone doesn’t think, it’s annoying, but when someone has a conversation with me, you get me. I think that I always find a way to relate to the situation by just being myself and having a conversation.

Kylie’s an Australian singer who’s huge all over the word; do you aspire to be the male Kylie?

I don’t know if my butt’s as good! (laughs) Kylie’s been doing it for 15 years. She’s finally getting the success that she deserves. Maybe in seven years’ time, ask me, if I want to be like that. People like Madonna and Kylie, they’re extremely driven and dedicated on that one aspect. I want to have my private life and I want to have my career, but I would be content to be as successful as I am right now. This is more than enough.

Will you be reinventing yourself a la Madonna and Kylie?

I think that in many ways I have. I think the reason Savage Garden disbanded was because of a need to evolve. I was experimenting with a little of electronics and soul and R&B for this record, and on the next record, I want to mix things even more. Otherwise, I would be bored; I wouldn’t want to do it anymore.

Finally, you’ve had numerous hair colours and styles, which is your fave?

Probably now, which is the least done, it’s just me. When I first began, I wanted to be somebody else, which is why I first reached for a bottle of black hair dye. But at the moment, I’m feeling pretty comfortable. What’s my natural hair colour? It’s blonde. Well, whatever this colour is, it’s it!

Spin is out in stores.
