Darren's Days
(The Sunday Times, July 7)

Solo artist and former Savage Garden front-man Darren Hayes talks to Funday about his school days

Hi Darren, tell us what your childhood was like.

I had an amazing childhood. Life in Australia was great and I was always really supported in whatever I did. I remember always being fascinated by America – where I live now. It was always this magical place that was on the television. I used to read American comics and send off money to buy all the American things I could get. Weirdly, I really remember the time I sent $1.25 for a container of those little Sea Monkeys!

What hobbies did you have when you were at school?

Well, my family didn’t have a lot of money but I was always putting on plays, painting and writing songs and stories. I learnt to amuse myself. When I was five or six, I could be thrilled for hours with nothing more than a cardboard box, a roll of Sellotape and some glue! No, seriously.

What kind of pupil were you at school?

I loved school. I was pretty hardworking, almost bordering on the nerd-like. I was known as the arty kid who used to do the school musicals and play instruments and stuff. I suppose I just used to dream a lot!

What was your favourite practical joke at school?

I once wrote a love letter to a teacher from someone else to get them into trouble! I did used to mess around a lot, but I was always polite.

What have been your best and worst moments as a pop star?

The worst moment was when I was with Savage Garden, when I fell off the stage in Brisbane, Australia. We had a different spotlight operator that night and both Daniel [the other member of Savage Garden] and I fell off the stage, which was very embarrassing. My best moment was performing after the Sydney Olympics in front of 150,000 people in a huge park. It was wonderful, and a big honour to be asked.

Tell us about your new single.

I love Strange Relationship, as it’s one of the first songs I wrote for my album. It’s a mix of soul and pop and it’s about a bad relationship that’s also very passionate. A relationship that you know is wrong but it also makes you feel good.

Strange Relationship is released tomorrow
