Darren Hayes - Crush(1980ME)
|
1983. Big Hair. E.T Rubik's Cube. Star Wars Movies. Cyndi Lauper. Prince. Michael Jackson. Madonna. The man who would grow up to be one of Australiaıs biggest musical exports was then only 11 years of age. But by all accounts, even back then, he knew. "I wasnıt like a lot of other kids. I got lost in my imagination and I definitely had a connection with music and the superstars of the day that was beyond being a fan. Iıd go to a concert and instead of screaming and getting into It.. I just kept thinking about how badly I wanted to be up on that stage". Darren Hayes has made no secret of his love of the 80's. He's practically made a career of it. In this, his almost public goodbye to musical homage, he bids a fond farewell to the decade of decadence as musical muse. "I'm sure I learned to sing, write songs and perform by absorbing everything that year had to offer me as a child. I needed my idols growing up. But right now even Iım ready to move on. I don't really want to look back or look up to anyone else. Writing Crush was my way of saying 'so long and thanks for the memories' to that period of my life". Crush is sugar pop with a capital P. Three and half minutes of rapid fire vocals and beach boys harmonies all set to French disco beats. "I know this isn't my 'Stairway To Heaven'.. but Crush has always been my favourite song on the record. You put it on.. and you just smile. You can't argue with that kind of logic. To me, this song sounds like the memories I had when I was a kid and I believed anything was possible" Hayes believed in the song so much, he commissioned and shot a video for the single well before record companies even agreed to it's release. It seems his insistence paid off. Many are saying this video, itself a talking piece due to its cheeky almost too authentically 80's aesthetic is his best yet. Shot on location in an old drive in theatre on Brisbaneıs South Side with student filmmaker GRANT MARSHALL, CRUSH is deliciously fun and funny. "We went for it. From the costumes to the choreography.. this video is more 80's than the 80's were." Hayes enthuses. He continues, "The thing about working with a student film maker is that I was taking a risk. I used my own money and I stepped outside the boundaries because I knew that at this level of my career I had to take a risk. People tend to see my name and assume the budgets will be big and sadly the ideas are boring. And cliched. I got so much satisfaction out of challenging all those stereotypes and actually taking the piss out of myself to a certain degree." Like all good 80's films, Crush has a love triangle, Leg Warmers, and a conflict that can only be resolved through dance. Darrenıs own father has a blink or youıll miss him part as shopkeeper.
