Savage Garden Star Hits Back Over Breakup
(Brisbane Sunday Mail, November 4, 2001)

When former SG singer Darren Hayes returns to Queensland this week, he wont be getting together wiht his old bandmate Daniel Jones.

Despite what Jobes says, the breakup of Australias most lucrative musical export has not been amicable.

Asked if he would pose for a photo with Jones in Brisbane, Hayes said "It's going to be a while before that happens."

The split was revealed by a Melbourne jouranlist who interviewed Hayes last month. The next day Jones held a hastily convened press conference saying the split had been a bolt from the blue.

But in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Mail in Sydney on Friday, Hayes insisted the the breakup had come as no surprise to Jones.

In fact, Hayes says Jones insitgated the split two years ago before the duo's hit album Affirmation was even recorded saying he wanted to pull out of SG.

"The thing is that it really was Daniel's decision and I respected that" hayes said. "But maybe seeing the reality of it in print hit home and he realised the door was closed."

"We'd been preparing for the past two years, since he dumped the news on everybody. When he first told us what was going on, I kind of freaked out. It was like "Oh my god what'll i do?"

"I spoke to daniel before his prss conference and he asked me what i wanted him to tell the media. I said to just tell them the truth. "Tell them that you left the band is how I put it"

"To suggest that I had broken up the band and hadnt told him about it was completely untrue. He knew the announcement was about to happen, it just came a week earlier than expected."

Once jones had said he wanted out, Hayes began writing and recording his solo debut Spin, to be released in March.

The album was unveiled late last week and the Sydney home of Hohn Woodruff-the entrepeneur who discovered SG in the mid 90s- to a small cluster of industry heavyweights including Ian "Molly" Meldrum.

"Its a really 'up' record, a party record, its a romantic record, a lovers record and its sexy" hayes said.

"I wanted to have 35 or 40 songs ready to find out who i was as an artist. But sometimes it was terrifying because i was used to having my copilot Daniel Jones there wiht me.

"After all, I was 18 when i first met Daniel and he was the first person i ever wrote songs with. And the only person i wrote with for about 10 years.

"Being without him forced me to dig within. Now i couldnt go back to a duo. now i couldnt imagine not having this much control, because it has been very satisfying."

"But its all ok. From my point of view there are no hard feelings."

"There were different agendas. I mean, I am a performer and therein lies the juxtaposition. He's a talented songwriter and a great producers. I think hes happy and i do wish the best.

"And theres no doubt that i absolutely wouldnt be here now if i hadnt met daniel.

"Hayes, who has reverted to his natural blonde hair is shooting the video for his debut solo single Insatiable before making a 36 hour visit to Brisbane for a brief family reunion this week, the first time he's seen his relatives since they spent last Christmas together in Byron Bay.

After that, there is a whirlwind promotions schedule in the US, Hapan and Europe.
